Paidea and Ludus types of games and explanations



Agon (competition)

Paidea (played for fun)
Fifa can be considered as a game that is played for pleasure. Gamers play opponents all over the world to see who the best is and how many games they can win. Fifa is one of the most popular, competitive games that’s played online. Pro Evolution Soccer is also classed as a play for fun game because it has the same components as Fifa.




Ludus (rules)
Medal of honor and Call of Duty can be classed as a ludus game as it is follows rules that are set for the event or the entire campaign which tells the user how to play the game. This restricts the things that can be done however it is still a great game to play on a competitive scale.



Alea (chance)

Paides (played for fun)
Mine craft is a great chance game where u get to dig and collect Martials that allow you to build different thing. This is classified as a chance game as there are chances for you to find gold by mining. It is also a play for fun game as you can do almost anything in this world, build many different things which keeps the player interested and engaged.


Ludus (rules)
Draughts is a simple game but has its own rules as well. You can only move a limited number of spaces. This game is a chance game as it all depends on where you move and how you will then determine the outcome of the game.


Ilinx (movement)

Paidea (played for fun)
Sims is a great ilinx game. It has great movement features where you can walk around the environment and change your surroundings as you see fit.



Ludus (rules)
Mirror edge is a also a great movement game but unlike Sims it has its rules where u have to go through this one set story line, you can dictate what happens in the area but the you need the predicted result to move on.



Mimicry (role playing)

Paidea (play for fun)
Grand theft auto and silkroad online are great role playing game. It is classified as a play for fun game ask it has a big world where you can do almost anything kill people, fly planes and steal cars. The mimicry part of the game is where you have to do the same basic killing and evasion to complete a mission, most missions are similar but slightly different.




Ludus (rules)

Lord of the rings online is a mimicry game as you have to do the same thing over and over to progress in the game. It is a ludus game as there are rules you need to follow to progress in the game like doing quests, this give you experience points which help you level up.

    Adding images to the post gives the blog an added visual dimension.

    While there is an element of pleasure in kicking a ball about, something like the FIFA games, where there is a struggle between teams/players and clear outcomes (winning/losing) would be described as ludic using Caillois's terms.

    Kicking a ball against a wall, or throwing / kicking a ball back and forth between friends for fun, without any sense of competition, would be paideic.

    Draughts isn't really a game of chance (alea) as players use their skill to move pieces. Some games could be pure chance, such as cutting a deck of cards to see who gets the highest card. Other games depend entirely on the players' skill (such as chess or draughts) while some games combine chance and skill, such as backgammon: the dice determine the number of points to be moved (chance) while the player uses skill to make the best move with any given throw.
